Blanco Brown Takes ‘Trailer Trap’ to No.1 With ‘The Git Up’

Viral breakout Blanco Brown and his irresistible “trailer trap” single, “The Git Up,” have hit No.1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart, marking the fastest climb to the top since Sam Hunt’s record-setting “Body Like a Back Road.”

Topping the chart in just five weeks based mostly on streaming and single downloads (Hunt blazed to the top in two), the unlikely hit will now officially impact impact Country radio July 15, having already been featured on The Bobby Bones Show, NPR’s Fresh Air and more.

Brown first shared the grooving country-rap fusion online on April 26, along with a video of Brown performing the track’s dance which has since garnered more than 500 million views. Since then, the track has also claimed the Number One spot on Spotify’s “Global Viral 50,” “US Viral 50” and “Canada Viral 50” charts, and Sounds Like Nashville spoke with the newly minted star backstage during the 2019 CMA Music Festival.

“I started out with country music as a young kid just singing records over and over again,” Brown said, explaining a youth spent in the Atlanta projects during the school year and rural Georgia during summers. “The first record I knew was Tim McGraw’s [“Dont Take the Girl”], and then I fell in love with Johnny Cash — but I’m also a big fan and supporter of Outkast, and that’s really what my music is. It’s trailer park music meets trap music, I bridge the gap and call it ‘trailer trap.’”

Brown went on to note that his friends were at first skeptical of his music, saying a black artist could not make it in country — but times, and tastes, have changed.

“Everybody at the same moment just realizes this is something they’ve been missing, and I feel like that’s what my music is,” he explained. “It’s refreshing, and it’s a lifestyle.”
