BobbyCast Recap: Bobby Bones Introduces Ingrid Andress

Ingrid Andress is a newer name in country music, and Bobby Bones brought her on as a guest on the latest episode of his podcast, BobbyCast, to allow fans to get to know her a little better. Ingrid dove into her background in the interview, talking a bit about her upbringing in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. She revealed that she was homeschooled through eighth grade, which allowed her to get to know her creative self and practice her music.

“I hated it at the time because I was a social person, but it gave me a lot of alone time to be creative and think of things in a different way instead of growing up the same way everyone else did,” she says.

Ingrid grew up playing piano and listening to mostly Christian
music, including the Newsboys, DC Talk and other bands. However, her friends
would burn CDs of whatever they were listening to, including country and
screamo music, which gave her wider exposure to mainstream music. This led
Ingrid and her friends to start a screamo/metal band, in which she played drums.

After her metal days were over, Ingrid attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. She left college early to move to Nashville in order to start her career in 2013. Once in Nashville, she waited tables and started making music connections by playing writers’ rounds.

Ingrid talked about many other interesting facets of her life and
career on the podcast. Here are a few highlights:

1. She’s written pop songs for other artists.

Ingrid has written multiple pop songs, including Charlie XCX’s
“Boys,” Fletcher’s “About You,” and DJ Vice’s “Steady 1234.” She wrote “Boys”
after being in a writing session with men who were talking about their girls in
different “area codes,” and she wanted to write a similar song, but from the
female perspective.

2. She’s written with some big names.

Ingrid has been in writing rooms with very established artists, including Alicia Keys and Sam Hunt. Ingrid says Alicia was “so welcoming and warm,” so she wasn’t too star-struck. It wasn’t until Alicia was recording the song they wrote that she realized the excitement of the moment.  As for writing with Sam, Ingrid says he was “great.”

3. She was on NBC’s The Sing-Off, twice!

Bobby asked Ingrid about a piece of information that he didn’t originally know: that she was on the NBC competition show, The Sing-Off! The show, which ran from 2009 to 2014, was an a cappella competition show. Ingrid competed on two seasons, one with a group named Pitch Slapped and one with her group, Delilah. Her group Delilah placed sixth in season three, which was the same season in which Pentatonix took home the first place trophy.

4. There is one song she wrote that she had to reluctantly give
away to another artist.

While Ingrid has both recorded her own songs and written songs
for other artists, there is one song that she hoped to never give away, but
unfortunately had to so in the end. She didn’t name the song or the artist, but
she says, “it was a song about my siblings and I wrote it for them and about
them. I thought it was really special and we were really precious with who we
wanted to give it away to.”

In the end though, Ingrid says, “it was a situation where I
didn’t really have a say.”
