BobbyCast Recap: Comedian Dusty Slay Talks Playing The Opry And His Favorite Country Singer

On episode #195 of his podcast, BobbyCast, Bobby Bones chatted with Nashville-based comedian, Dusty Slay. Dusty’s comedy is inspired by everything from his upbringing in a trailer park in Opelika, Alabama to his every day interactions with people. Dusty is also a country fan, and he told Bobby that if he had to choose one song to listen to before he died, it would be a Hank Williams Jr. tune.

“I might go a Hank Jr., ‘Country Boy Can Survive,’” Dusty says. “I always liked that song. I don’t listen to it much anymore because I burned it up, but I always loved it. And what a good way to go out.”

Dusty has played on many prized
stages, including The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and
the Grand Ole Opry. Dusty says he ‘loves’ playing the Opry, and as a
perk, he also got to meet some of his favorite country music stars.

“I met John Conlee,” he says. “I’m a huge John Conlee fan. I went home and I just listened to country music all night. I met Charlie Daniels up there, Charley Pride, Trace Adkins. It’s amazing.”

Dusty has also had the chance to work with one of his comedic heroes, Jeff Foxworthy. But no matter who he’s worked with or which stages he’s played, Dusty knows he’s earned his way there.

“I feel that when you really work
your way up, you feel like you belong,” Dusty says. “Even when you’re around
these famous people, you’re like, ‘I worked for this. I earned this. I didn’t
just get this happenstance.’”

To hear Dusty talk about his rise in comedy, how he crafts his jokes and more, listen to episode #195 of the BobbyCast.
