Dixie Chicks Detail New Album, Reveal Possible Title

As anticipation builds around a new Dixie Chicks album which is currently in the works, band leader Natalie Maines has shared some intriguing details about the infamous country trio’s “most personal” release yet.

Speaking recently on the Spiritualgasm podcast, Maines explained that the project is at least partially inspired by her ongoing divorce from actor Adrian Pasdar, and that it’s working title is Gaslighter — named after one of the tracks and a term used to describe manipulation and psychological abuse.

Early on, the band planned to do a covers album as an “easy” way to finish out their seven-album contract with Sony, Maines admitted, “But then my relationship fell apart, and I had a lot to say.

“Songwriting is really hard for me, and I think for many years, I didn’t want to analyze my life or my relationship,” she explained. “I was just in it and dedicated and devoted, and if I had started writing songs about it … I don’t want to say I was in a ‘survival mode,’ but I was just not ready to open up like that.”

The iconic band’s last album was 2006’s challenging Taking the Long Way, which dealt with the fallout from Maines’ critical remarks of then President George W. Bush in 2003 and won five Grammy awards, including Album of the Year. Maines said that project was the group’s “most personal and autobiographical” at the time, but the new album — produced alongside pop hitmaker Jack Antonoff — “is 10 times that.”

Meanwhile, Maines also hinted at a 2020 Dixie Chicks tour, and while none of the details have been made final — including album title or potential tour — the album is expected to be released next year.
