Eric Church and Keith Urban Team for New Version of ‘We Were’

The world already knew Eric Church was a co-writer on Keith Urban’s reflective new single, “We Were,” but now Church is also a co-SINGER on the track.

Released today (October 21), the remixed version finds the somtimes-duo trading vivid, memories throughout its verses — and then coming together to pine for what might have been in the end. Urban takes the first few bars (just like in the original), and then Church jumps in to bring his own words to life. It’s all about a first love which could have ended up becoming so much more, and the collaboration was teased by Urban in a series of social media posts over the weekend.

The song has always had a hint of Church’s musical D.N.A. in it — especially the quick-hitting imagery and rebellious, “Outsiders”-esque description of the two main characters. But back in May when the track first came out, Urban admitted he had no idea Church was involved in its creation. That news quickly made its way to The Chief, who said he was honored Urban was interested only in the song itself.

It’s not the first time the superstars have collaborated together — having also done so on Urban’s 2013 hit, “Raise ‘Em Up.” The friends will be pitted against each other next month, however, since both are nominated for the coveted Entertainer of the Year prize at this year’s CMA Awards (November 13).
