Gabby Barrett isn’t hiding her true feelings in her new single, “I Hope.” Singing of a cheating ex-boyfriend and hoping what goes around comes around, the American Idol finalist is sizzling in the new track.
In support of the song, Barrett has released video containing a tangled web of disloyal lovers. Filmed in Nashville, the video begins with Barrett and her boyfriend in a blissful time, until he catches the eye of another and quickly moves on, only to have his new leading lady eventually do the same to him.
When writing the song with Zachary Kale and Jon Nite, the trio came to the idea of a past relationship and the woman wishing her ex well even though he’s moved on. But upon peeling back the layers of the story, Barrett wanted to write women truly think after being the victim of infidelity.
“We sat around and thought about it and then we came to the idea in writing a song about a guy and a girl that didn’t work out, but the girl still wishes him kind of well even though he’s moved on, but she’s still being nice. And I said, ‘that’s not how girls really think. We’re really like “I hope she ends up cheating on you because you did me wrong.”’ It’s kind of what this song is about,” explained Barrett in a video about the backstory of “I Hope.” “I wanted it to be the things we kind of never say. For it to be that song that kind of empowers girls when they hear it and they think of that one guy or girl that they were with and kind of dedicate it to them in that way.”

Barrett will take the unforgiving song out on the road with several dates in 2019. She’s currently in the studio working on her debut project with GRAMMY-nominated producer Ross Copperman.
