Country icon Keith Urban returns with a sweet-singing love note to the one who got away in “We Were,” his just-released new single.
The contemplative track is not included on Urban’s progressively-minded Grafitti U album, and may (or may not) hint that a new project is coming soon from the reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year. One thing we know for sure, though, is that it works like a heartbroken journal entry, with memories of days gone by turning over and over on a loop in Urban’s mind.
Featuring relaxed country instrumentation and Urban’s dynamic vocal at its most delicate, “We Were” is a nostalgic anthem to missed chances and relationships that change your life – even if you didn’t realize it at the time. It was produced by Urban with Dann Huff and written by fellow country hit maker Eric Church with Jeff Hyde and Ryan Tyndell.
“We were leather jackets hangin’ on to a Harley, two heartbeats in the moonlight / We were both feet hangin’ out over the edge of a water tower skyline / At least there’s a little bit of sweet in the bitter though a part of me is always gonna miss her / I am who I am, I just miss who I was when we were,” goes the reflective chorus.
“I like the idea that life just happens,” Urban says of the song. “At some point, whether in the moment or not, you just gotta go with it. When I first heard ‘We Were,’ I not only heard it, but I saw it. It made me feel something. The imagery is so strong – a stamp on the back of a hand, a Saturday night cover band, the girlfriend (or boyfriend) we ran with, and a fake ID (which of course I never had). So many of us can relate or will likely relate at some point!”

Urban first performed the song in public at the 2019 Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, and officially premiered it this morning (May 14th) on The Bobby Bones Show – where Urban also admitted he had no idea Church was a writer on the song when he recorded it.
Urban just finished up his Graffiti U World Tour and will perform at festivals and fairs across the country this summer. He previously unveiled the moving “Burden” onstage at the 54th ACM Awards.
