My name is Stacy Billingslea and I am the founder of Milo’s Dog Rescue of South Florida, Inc., a 501c3 not-for-profit dog and cat rescue organization located in Pompano Beach, FL. Our organization is entirely privately funded and 100% of the funds go directly toward rescuing, rehabilitating and placing dogs and cats in loving homes after being found on the streets or turned in by families that can no longer care for their pet. Milo’s has no paid employees and all volunteers committed to Milo’s provide assistance out of the goodness of their hearts which means more funds go directly to the animals.
I have rescued animals my entire life. Approximately 7 years ago, I began actively volunteering with another rescue group. Over the course of a few years, I began to see that the animals at the rescue were not being treated properly, funds were at times being misappropriated and sufficient home checks were not being conducted. As that rescue group disbanded, I watched the last puppy in the rescue’s final litter go to an abusive home and ultimately had to be euthanized. Prior to being adopted, my daughter named him Milo.
It was then, 5 years ago, that I decided to open my own rescue where I could ensure funds were used appropriately, dogs and cats were treated properly and fosters and families with a desire to adopt were fully vetted before accepting an animal from Milo’s. Milo’s finds homes for an average of 100 dogs every year. The dogs and cats brought into Milo’s care have a variety of backgrounds. Some are surrendered by their owners due to difficult family situations. Others have been severely neglected or make their way to Milo’s by good Samaritans. Regardless of their past, all the animals that are taken under Milo’s care have one thing in common – a second chance at a great life.
When Milo’s receives a new animal, he or she is immediately given a health screening. Any medical conditions discovered are treated and the animal is fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered and micro chipped. Each pet is then carefully matched with a family that has filled out an extensive adoption application and a home check is conducted. After a suitable match is found, the dog or cat is on its way to its new forever home and off to live the pampered life that every pet deserves.
The rescue is run out of my house and the homes of fosters who graciously open their doors and hearts to love and care for these animals while they recover from any abuse or health related issues and wait for their forever home. I could not run this organization alone and I am forever grateful to the wonderful volunteers who help me each and every week. Every weekend, I and fellow volunteers travel around the county to different events where we showcase all of the animals in hopes of finding loving families. It is a tremendous amount of work and I struggle each and every day just trying to keep ahead of the fastest of the pack but the site of seeing a broken, abused or abandoned animal bring joy and love to a family and receive the same in return keeps me going.
